The Role
We are now seeking a Materials Expert – IV Bags. This is a specialist position where you will be the company’s key resource on the materials and systems used in IV bag manufacturing. The role combines deep knowledge of plastics and packaging components with a strong understanding of sterility, regulatory frameworks, and manufacturing processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as subject matter expert on IV bag materials (films, ports/connectors, overpouch, inks/printing).
- Evaluate and qualify plastics such as PP, PVC, and PVC-free alternatives, ensuring compatibility with products and printing inks.
- Assess the impact of sterilization processes on material performance.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and quality standards (USP, Ph.Eur, ISO).
- Conduct and interpret material testing: leakage, seal integrity, oxygen transmission, extractables/leachables, migration, and adhesion.
- Collaborate closely with suppliers of films, connectors, and bag-making machinery.
- Lead cross-functional projects with Technical, QA, Business Development, Production, and Regulatory teams.
- Maintain ownership of the complete IV bag system – from film to ports and overpouches– ensuring safe, sterile, and compliant solutions.
Qualifications
- Background as a Packaging Engineer, Container Closure Specialist, or equivalent within pharma, medical devices, or parenterals.
- Hands-on experience with aseptic filling and terminally sterilized products.
- Strong understanding of testing methodologies and documentation requirements for packaging components in pharma.
- Demonstrated ability to lead projects across multiple disciplines.
- Experience from other pharmaceutical companies, suppliers of IV bag films/machinery is highly relevant.
